living on the edge

(aka, breaking my personal rule of posting past 10pm)

There have been a lot of old-school bands hit Nashville recently: for example, Third Eye Blind is playing on Monday (alas, sold out), and more ridiculously, Creed is gracing us with their presence this month. And although there are two pricing options ($85 or $7), no one I talk to seems to think paying $7 for an evening of hilarity and blatant ridicule would be worth it. bummer. I was ready to pull out all of my grungy rock attire and sing "with arms wide open" at the top of my lungs.

That could be me, right there, inches away from Scott Stapp. hah

A Very Potter Musical

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this, but let's go with it anyhow...

hiya fall

So, obviously summer did not include prime months of blogging frequency. My apologies. But it's September, Nashville feels like fall, all of my cardigans are at ready access, and I'm back. With a bang. (or not.)

I watch Mad Men a lot these days. Or, for a while I did. Now I'm caught up and just watch one a week. I'm waiting for this season to be as good as the others. I have my doubts.

I saw Julie & Julia. Mistake #1. Almost left halfway through. However, the good that did come of it (and from the speaker at work last week who mentioned it and wonderful A.J. Jacobs books), is that I think I'm going to come up with a yearly project. (Yes, Linda, similar to yours, but not in 1001 days and more focused.) Perhaps a book list to work through. I'm trying to figure out how many books per year is realistic. 52 books in 52 weeks sounds nice, but when you think about it, that's a lot of books. Anyhow, I'm open for suggestions (books and/or projects.)

changes

i'm considering going brunette this fall. (after your wedding, stephanie dear)

drawbacks:
my hair is long. will take forever to grow out.
i don't really want to dye it for the rest of my life.

so...maybe just temporary dye? give it a try?

thoughts?

(i know this was the brilliant return to blogging that you were all anxiously waiting for.)

recent musings & happenings

I got a new driver's license.

Someone wrote this on one of my birthday cards: "you're the real slim shady."
get it? get it?

Lately I feel like I'm living in a rainforest with all of the precipitation and none of the parrots.

Sometimes I go to the grocery store just for chocolate soy milk. I mean, it's not that bad of an addiction, right?

I used to never remember my dreams. Lately, I remember all of them. And they're bizarre. The other day I had a dream where I played bass and accordion with Victor Wooten. He was playing piano. I was awesome. I just couldn't figure out how to get my amp to work.

they're baaaaaack.

Okay, I can't believe I'm writing about this, but seriously, the song whatsherface on American Idol wrote for the guys to sing...what was that? Most awkward melody/rhythm ever; cheesiest lyrics I've heard since a Disney film. They should get rid of her and Paula. I mean, all Paula does is dance and talk about how much she loves everyone. How does that even count as judging?

some of my favorite lines...

climb mountains
go higher, go deeper
made it through the pain
through the hurricane
take you by the hand
follow your dreams

I may secretly love Glee, too. Any show that uses an a capella rendition of Golliwog's Cakewalk as part of its theme music is well worth a watch.

farewell, arkansas

Within the next week or so, I will officially become a Tennessee state resident. I admit I'm not really looking forward to spelling Tennessee all of the time...I already have plenty of double-letters in my name.

Also, as a result of needing to get a TN driver's license, it's time I finally nail down what color I say my eyes are. Let's be honest, we all know the answer is actually "impossible to tell due to constant dilation," but I don't think that will fly. I'd have to add a stipulation that, no, I've never been high--my eyes just prefer loathing sunshine and headlights at night.

sooo...now taking votes. grey perhaps? they're not blue...or green...and there's no brown, so they can't be hazel...although, my right tends to be bluer and my left greener...and they sometimes change colors. I'll let you decide.

I'll leave you with a visual ode to my favorite parts of Arkansas,
my home for roughly 22 years.

The Razorbacks...I mean, who knows what a razorback is. Seriously.

Crater of Diamonds State Park.
The only public access diamond mine in the world. You keep what you find. I just wish I was around in 1924 when some guy found that 40+ carat diamond.
(I'm sad I still haven't gone here.)

Mount Petit Jean (and Mount Nebo.) Tons of great memories of sunsets, sunrises, weddings, hiking, swimming, cookouts, etc. at both places.

The old license plates. With the 'r' leaf.

Growing up in the shadow of Arkansas Nuclear One
Every child (myself included) thought their dad worked at the 'cloud factory.'
perk: the glow-in-the-dark capabilities come in super handy.

Eureka Springs
The best quirky, haunted, hilly, Victorian town on the planet.
Also, home to Thorncrown Chapel, built by E. Fay Jones.

The Ozark Mountains

oh...and one mustn't forget the Clintons...looking FINE, you two.

...and much more, but i'm too lazy to find anything else.

well, then.

Is it just me, or do the ink-blot, smoke effects in this trailer make LOST's smoke monster look completely ridiculous?

suggestions?

so guess who's going to see 500 Days of Summer next week?
that's right: me!

Thanks to the wonderful Nashville Film Festival.

That being said, if anyone feels inclined to wade through the mass of films and tell me the ones that could be worth my time, feel free.

Linda, there's a Robert Pattinson one...hah.

today...

So, the majority of my coworkers are married or engaged, so they (mostly the guys) are routinely trying to fix me up (with their brothers, etc.) After I told them I wasn't about to date someone 30 or older, I was given this equation:

your age ÷ 2 + 7 = the age of someone you can date

So, I did the math:
22 ÷ 2 + 7 = 18
22 + 18 = 40

40.

At this point, I collapsed into horror-stricken, tears-streaming-down-my-face laughter that continued for a good 3-4 minutes. Just as I stopped, one of my supervisors came by and asked why I was crying. Which started the laughter/crying again. Needless to say, my coworkers got a big kick out of this.

They decided the equation only works for how much younger you can date, thus proving that I should date their 30-year-old friends/relatives.

(30 ÷ 2 + 7 = 22)

I happen to disagree.

"and maybe she's an uppity, better-than-everyone, super-skank."

i would like this to come out now.

Also, at lunch today, we had a discussion about cliques in high school. I had forgotten the word skank existed until we discussed whether guys could be skanks. Thoughts?

miscelleaneous items no one likely cares about

1. the word "swag" has infiltrated the commercials on my favorite radio stations. (and no, not hip hop stations.) I am not okay with this.

2. it's about time they put up a trailer:
Where the Wild Things Are

3. in my mind, i refer to the cool springs area as disney world. it's a city planner's dream suburban village. who needs sidewalks when everyone owns a lexus?

twitter

2 weeks ago I barely knew what it actually was.
Then I found out and thought:
This is the stupidest thing ever.
I said I'd refuse based on principle.
I don't want to read facebook status updates 24/7.

but I might have to get one.
for curiosity.
and research.
and checking up on work stuff.

but not ever for posting my own meaningless activities.
hold me to it.

also, on an unrelated note, the bi-monthly anticipation of exciting netflix movies arriving in my mailbox makes me really happy.

Countdown

29 days.

Sunday, March 22, 2009

well hey there!

so here's what I've been up to:

cardinology
Last Sunday, I went with my friend Stephanie to see Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. I know he's all clean and happily married to Mandy Moore (seriously?) now, but I will admit that I was still hoping he'd flip out towards the end and throw a fit. But...he didn't. Just some good-natured profanity. And it was okay, because they played 33 songs, including a 3-4 song encore that started out with his Wonderwall cover, which I shamelessly love love love. I also might believe the inner-ear problems excuse for his soon-to-be concerting absence; I really thought he was going to lose his balance and fall over the whole show.

busy, busy
That is what work has been. I'm alright with it though, because it makes me feel productive and I get to make tons of lists of things to do everyday and cross them off. And who doesn't like making lists?

i heart pei wei
And I had a gift card...and a willing friend to help me use the gift card. Need I say more?

sedum limelight
I bought a plant for work to take the edge off the IKEA. Read the label on the way home and saw the words "full sun." My black, blinds-windowed, minimally-lighted office is just not going to cut it. He shall be a stay-at-home plant.

thrifty
After helping a couple friends search for a house to rent in East Nashville, we decided to hit up some of the Saturday garage sales, church parking lot sales, and thrift stores. I got two skirts for 50 cents each, and this lovely dress for $12. Now all I need is a garden party to attend.

the 5th annual gumbofest
This was my very first GumboFest experience, and my dear friends at the Farm did not disappoint. I'm already looking forward to GumboFest 2010. Come one, come all. I ate some chicken gumbo and some gator gumbo, and made small talk with 100+ friends and strangers until I remembered that I hate talking to people I don't know and went home. Also---found the baby in the king cake. Still not sure if it really counts since I picked the piece where I could see the baby poking its way out.

*This post brought to you by rule-breaking. Which is what I'm doing by breaking my personal rule of never posting something on a blog after 10pm. I tend to lose rationality past 10pm. oops.
